The City of Cinehagen

EST. YEAR
(click map to view full size)
The city of Cinehagen has had a long, torrid history since its establishment as the nation's capital. Sitting along the Aerilon Sea, this once modest harbor town quickly grew into the industrial giant it is today. It was the sight of a few major battles in its earliest years, and later became known as the location where the Godwins rule came to an end in a bloody struggle. While things weren't sunshine and daisies at first, the city eventually came to grip with its new lot. And under Fairchild rule, it has certainly prospered. The denizens of Pitchfell have always been firm believers in technology and innovation, and were among the first to put an end to magic as a driving force in the country. This focus on invention has made Pitchfell the foremost leaders in the industrial revolution that swept the known world, making the nation a small but formidable global superpower.

Blackhold - The Royal Palace

Royal Family
For nearly four hundred years, the Fairchilds have ruled over Pitchfell with an even-tempered elegance that keeps them unique from the other monarchs of the world. The Fairchilds are deeply loved by the majority of their subjects and have always inspired an intense loyalty, even before their rise to power. Currently, the nation is ruled by His Royal Highness King Edwin Fairchild. With their intense interest in technology and moving forward, the Fairchild family has been accused of focusing too much on the future and on their subjects who are able to invent, teacher, and help that progress. After the death of Queen April and Prince Richard over a decade ago, King Edwin made very few public events, and much of the love for the family came from the antics of Prince Victor -- a light hearted drunk. Now that Victor is recently deceased, the only Fairchild heir is Princess Helena, the quiet daughter who hasn't even been in Pitchfell since the queen died.

The Royal Gardens

Heavily guarded, rarely open to the public
In a large, bustling city, the Royal Gardens offer some peace and tranquility amidst the chaos. A favorite of Princess Helena's, the best gardeners were hired to ensure that it flourished in her absence. With the largest assortment of plants in the entire kingdom, it is a popular spot during the summer for tea parties and important conversations amongst the nobles. However, only the nobility and royalty are allowed in for most of the year. During festivals, however, small groups of those in the working class are allowed in, but only with a tour guide.

Dragwatch

The Protectors of the City
Serving many purposes, Dragwatch is home to every soldier in the city. Men come from far and wide to train in the barracks to prepare for assignment, whether they join the soldiers protecting the country's borders, the City Watch, or the Elite Royal Guard. Dragwatch boasts a large training facility, weapons storage, and living quarters for Cinehagen's finest. There are three distinct types of guards and there are some differences in opinions amongst the ranks, causing a fair amount of discord between them. The barracks themselves are old, but sturdy with no weak points in sight. An indication for what the king expects of his soldiers themselves. With all three captains changing within the last decade, things have begun to change. For better or worse, no one can tell just yet.

Whitebridge

The Noble Families
Far removed from the poverty of most of the city is Whitebridge, home to all of the noble families in Cinehagen. The homes here are large, lavish, and beautiful. Many City Watchmen patrol here in an effort to keep the lower classes as far away from the area as possible. It certainly helps that Whitebridge borders Dragwatch and the Royal Gardens. Nobles visiting from other areas of the country have a seasonal home here, as well as an extravagant inn for nobles visiting from allied countries.

Kennuckwallow - Merchants' Square

Reputable Businesses of All Sorts
Do you have a reputable business endorsed by the crown? This is where that business would be located. Most merchants live above their own shops as well, but sometimes noble men who open businesses hire somebody to do that. The streets are always clean, especially in the mornings when the merchants sweep outside their storefronts. It is a safe and comfortable place to be during the day, but can occasionally be dangerous at night. All that revenue attracts some of the more unsavory sorts to try and obtain it through nefarious means. City Watchmen patrol regularly, but they don't have eyes everywhere all the time.

Scranfall - The Temple of the Windrose

Worship of the North
Built more recently than much of Cinehagen, the temple only came into prominence with the rise of the new religion and the death of magic. Intent on making saints out of the city dwellers, the officials within the temple spend most of their time there. However, there are a select few who spend the day during the farmer's market preaching to crowds and drawing people in to confess their sins at the temple. A grand majority of the population already go to temple to repent for their sins and to worship the deities, but there are a select few who do not believe at all or, worse, believe in the old religion in secret. The temple is currently working to convince both groups that theirs is the true way.

Velociport - Public Market

The Steampunk Walmart
If you can't afford Merchants' Square (and it's completely understandable, given how expensive and exclusive it is), the next best thing is the public market. With a primary focus on produce and handmade goods, the public market is the idea place to shop. You can find everything from cured meats and fresh vegetables, to hand woven blankets and gears and switches for your home. Of course this means that there's a much higher turnout of people nearly everyday, which puts a strain on the Watch. Pickpockets and other such thieves abound here despite the best efforts of the city's finest, but that shouldn't deter you too much from your daily shopping.

Velociport - The Air Docks

Airships From All Over
There are technically two parts of the docks. Given that Pitchfell is more or less surrounded by water, the country began as a primarily sea faring people, so it makes sense that there would be a top dock and a lower dock. And it would probably be pretty obvious which belonged to which. Although airships have been around for long enough time to become an established and important part of the world's society, it's only been recently that sea faring ships have been on the decline. With the exception of fishermen and the odd nostalgic traveler, very few people actually traverse the seas anymore. That said, working on the docks is still as likely as ever. Dock work may not be the easiest work to get into, but it's often viewed as less dangerous than factory jobs.

Graywatch - Hangman's Alley

The Underbelly of the City
It wasn't always called something so gruesome, if you can believe it. Graywatch was just like any other district in the city once upon a time, but as the years rolled on and crime began to spike, the origin of those less than reputable folks became clear. Full of thieves and cutthroats, only those hardened to the world or born into the noose seem able to thrive here. Nearly a hundred years ago, a widespread purge was enacted in an effort to remove these undesirables from Cinehagen -- the hangman's noose became such a common sight that eventually Graywatch became known as Hangman's Alley. Of course, the efforts weren't nearly as successful as the King had hoped. The undesirables found new places to hide and to flourish and eventually, the practice died out. Now, it's an open secret that Hangman's Alley is not where you want to find yourself alone and with a full purse. But if ever you're in need of assistance of dubious legality, Hangman's Alley is exactly where you need to be.

Rookcairn - The Slums

Give Us Your Poor, Bring Us Your Dead
The lowest of the low live here. Rookcairn is run down and dangerous at all hours of the day and night. The Watch rarely patrols here because they don't want that kind of trouble, though patrols have been on the incline in recent years since a new City Captain has taken over. Still, home improvement is not on the forefront of anyone's mind here because they are more worried about getting food on the table or finding the means to replace the worn out essentials they may have. Some here are factory workeres, some have entered the working class to try and escape the slums, but some are stuck in a cycle of crime, trying to escape but knowing they have nowhere else to go.

Market

All the legitimate businesses the city has to offer. Every single one pays a hefty tax for the courtesy of the King's protection, but at least they can say their work is honest work.

Industrial District

Series of factories
Farming was never going to be Pitchfell's greatest strength, that much is certain. Before the rise of industry, it seemed unlikely Pitchfell would make much of an impact on the world at all. All of that changed when King Benedict Fairchild led the country away from silly notions of magic and paganism, and right into the arms of technology and innovation. Now, hundreds of years later, Pitchfell is the very picture of a global superpower, with Cinehagen sitting neatly in the forefront. Factories make up much of the city's job availability -- not just for how common they are, but also because positions tend to open up quick. Make no mistake that when we say factory work is dangerous, we certainly mean it. The equipment is large, heavy, and extremely difficult to navigate, and while employers are technically held accountable for these short comings, very rarely is anything actually done about it.

The Hangman's Road

PARKOUR
While not technically a business, the "road" is worth mentioning all the same. Nowhere else will you ever find a more agile group of people than in Hangman's Alley. With the buildings so close together, the Alley is home to a number of thieves and gangs that require constant communication among their ranks. As a result, couriers and even some members tend to travel via rooftop access -- waking up to the sound of feet padding against your roof isn't uncommon, but we certainly wouldn't attempt to put an end to it. Not to mention, open or unlatched windows do little to deter the occasional unwanted visitor. At the very least, one can be reasonably sure that the idea of an assassin leaping from building to building to get to you is a generally ludicrous one...though, now that we think of it, not unheard of.

The Thieves Guild

Criminal Organization
Arguably one of the most prominent organizations to emerge from Hangman's Alley, the Thieves Guild is both common knowledge and a carefully guarded secret. What began as a ragtag group of mischievous pickpockets grew into a well-connected enterprise, with deep pockets and a deeper network of alliances. Instructed and presumably led by a Yoscosi man named Olivier Bonheur, the Thieves Guild provides a much needed balance for Cinehagen. But it's their connection to the engimatic The Spider that makes them a force to be reckoned with -- with The Spider's guidance, they have a sort of monopoly over thefts within the capital. Any pickpocket or sloppy thief caught within the city is offered a choice: join the Guild, or lose a hand to the Watch.

Cogs and Kegs

Inventor, of sorts
After the fall from grace that Gabriel Ryan suffered some years ago, he has been forced from his swanky shop in Merchants' Square and taken up residence in Hangman's Alley. The move was met with some expected opposition -- his shop is outfitted with some of the best defense measures seen by todays' standards, and would-be thieves are easily deterred. Couple that with an agreement with the Thieves Guild, and Cogs and Kegs is probably the most fortified shop in the entire city. That said, disgraced doesn't mean out of commission -- Gabriel still takes on work whenever the opportunity arises. But these days, he's more likely to work on essential items the less fortunate might bring in, and often does so for free. Nobles may be less likely to visit him (the social repercussions tend to outweigh the need for it, after all), but it's not likely he'll be in need of their coin anyway.

The Dauntless

PIRATE SHIP
Once the prize airship in the king's navy, The Dauntless is now to be shot down on sight. Taken just two weeks after her unveiling, the pirate captain Agnes Godwin and her first mate Jace Crawford took her right from under the guards' noses. Now they are the most wanted people in all of Pitchfell, but that doesn't stop them from coming home and hiding out. The Dauntless boasts numerous technological advancements that no engineer has been able to recreate since, including a cloaking device to keep her from being caught.

The Graywater

PIRATE SHIP
At one point in time, The Graywater was among the first sea faring ships that was converted for air use. Since then, The Graywater was traded among a variety of owners over time until it came into the possession of Timothy Grayson, a pirate who saw the potential in the old girl. He managed to keep it in flight for a decade or so before he found himself in desperate need of coin. After making port in Pitchfell, Grayson befriended a young noble girl named Tovia Cunningham. He wooed her tirelessly, filling her ears with promises of world travel and exotic sights, until she agreed to leave with him willingly. But his trap backfired less than a month after they left Pitchfell -- Tovia turned half his crew against him and took The Graywater for herself, proving to be more of a pirate than anyone might have expected of her. She marooned him on some godforsaken spit of land and left him behind. Ever since, The Graywater has remained a formidable force in the sky.
